Temperature Resistance of Grade 304 Stainless Steel
Grade 304 stainless steel offers good oxidation resistance, performing well in intermittent service up to 870°C and in continuous service up to 925°C. However, continuous use within the 425-860°C range is not recommended if the material will later be exposed to room temperature aqueous environments, though it often handles fluctuating temperatures above and below this range effectively. Grade 304L, with its greater resistance to carbide precipitation, is suitable for use within this temperature range. When high-temperature strength is crucial, higher carbon values are necessary. For instance, the AS1210 Pressure Vessels Code limits the operating temperature of 304L to 425°C and requires 304 to have carbon values of 0.04% or higher for temperatures above 550°C.
