Welding Techniques for Stainless Steel
Several techniques are commonly used for welding stainless steel:
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG or GMAW): A versatile method suitable for various applications.
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG or GTAW): Slower but more precise than GMAW. It requires draft-free conditions to maintain gas shielding.
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW or Stick Welding): Involves slag removal between passes and after welding, as well as frequent replacement of the consumable stick.
- Submerged Metal Arc Welding (SAW): Suitable for plate welding but can cause unwanted phase formation in highly alloyed areas due to high heat input.
Each welding process yields different results. The best technique depends on the stainless steel thickness, speed and efficiency requirements, and the specified final appearance.
