Classification and Application of 304 Stainless Steel Insulation Pipe

Overview

304 stainless steel is widely used due to its excellent corrosion resistance, intergranular corrosion protection, and good performance in both hot and cold processing. It remains mechanically strong even at temperatures as low as -180°C. Additionally, in its solid solution state, this steel offers good plasticity, toughness, and processing properties. The material demonstrates strong corrosion resistance in various environments, such as oxidizing acids, atmospheric conditions, and water, making it the most popular and widely used type of stainless steel.

Processing

304 stainless steel can undergo common cold and hot processing methods. Products like forgings, bars, wires, plates, and strips can be produced within a hot processing temperature range of 900-1180°C. Cold processing is straightforward, though excessive deformation may require intermediate annealing to facilitate further processing, as the material hardens easily under cold working.

Heat Treatment Process

  • Solution Treatment: The solution treatment temperature for 304 stainless steel pipes ranges from 1080-1100°C. The cooling is done through water or air cooling.
  • Intermediate Annealing: During cold processing, intermediate annealing is typically performed at 850-970°C, followed by water cooling after heat preservation. After solution treatment, the structure of the steel is austenitic, with occasional traces of ferrite.

Cold Forming Performance

Cold forming is often used in the production of 304 stainless steel sheets. This performance is crucial for ensuring smooth processing and high yield. Factors affecting cold forming include the steel’s composition, specifically the ratio of chromium to nickel. The elongation during tensile testing is a key indicator of its cold forming performance. To achieve optimal results, the chromium-to-nickel ratio should be controlled within a specific range.

Applications

304 stainless steel is used across a variety of industries, including:

  • Food Equipment: Suitable for parts requiring deep drawing.
  • Chemical Equipment: Ideal for containers and acid pipelines.
  • Atomic Energy Industry: Components benefit from this steel’s properties.
  • Automotive and Home Appliances: Extensively used in vehicles, auto parts, and household appliances.

Additionally, 304 stainless steel is commonly utilized for producing thin-walled parts, non-magnetic parts, and components designed for low-temperature environments. It is also a key material for welding chromium-nickel stainless steel.
