What is SUS304 Stainless Steel?

SUS304 is a type of 304 stainless steel, classified according to Japanese material standards. It is equivalent to the American ASTM 304 standard and to the Chinese 0Cr18Ni9 stainless steel. Japan often adopts the American naming convention, hence the designation SUS304.

Key Properties of SUS304

SUS304 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion due to its high nickel content. It has an austenitic structure at room temperature, providing several advantages:

Corrosion Resistance: Better than Cr13 stainless steel, making it suitable for various environments.
Mechanical Properties: High plasticity and toughness across a range of temperatures, from low to high.
Cold Forming and Weldability: Easily shaped and welded without heat treatment.

However, SUS304 has some limitations, such as lower strength at room temperature and susceptibility to intergranular and stress corrosion. Additionally, it cannot be strengthened through heat treatment, as austenite does not undergo phase change when heated.

SUS304 pipes offer excellent resistance to heat and corrosion, as well as high strength across temperatures. They are also known for their good formability in hot processes like stamping and bending. Importantly, SUS304 does not harden after heat treatment and lacks magnetism.
