Forming and Machining Characteristics of Grade 304 Stainless Steel
Grade 304 stainless steel boasts excellent forming characteristics, allowing it to be deep drawn without intermediate heat softening. This feature makes it a popular choice for manufacturing drawn stainless parts like sinks and saucepans. It is also easily brake or roll formed into various parts for industrial, architectural, and transportation applications.
Grade 304 offers outstanding weldability, compatible with all standard welding techniques except oxyacetylene. Post-weld annealing is often unnecessary to restore its corrosion resistance, though proper post-weld cleaning is recommended. Grade 304L, which does not require post-weld annealing, is widely used in heavy gauge fabrication.
While the machinability of grade 304 is lower than that of most carbon steels, it can still be effectively machined using slower speeds, heavy feeds, sharp and rigid tools, and cutting fluids. An ‘improved machinability’ version of grade 304 is also available.
