Conditioning and Finishing of Stainless Steel Plates
Producers commonly condition plates by hand grinding after pickling to remove surface imperfections, ensuring the ground areas are well blended.
Cold rolling smoothes the steel surface with each pass through the rolling mill. Most stainless steel is cold rolled to reduce thickness by over 50%. It is then re-annealed at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius in an oxidizing atmosphere, which causes surface oxidation. Subsequent pickling roughens the cold-rolled surface.
Finally, the coils undergo a light skin pass on highly polished large-diameter rolls, slightly reducing roughness and improving both lustre and flatness. This results in a 2B finish, the most common finish for stainless steels.
