Conditioning and Cold Rolling of Plates
Producers commonly condition plates by manually grinding surface imperfections on one or both sides after pickling, ensuring the ground area blends seamlessly.
Cold rolling progressively smooths the steel surface with each pass through the rolling mill.
The majority of stainless steel is cold rolled to achieve more than a 50% reduction in thickness. Subsequently, it undergoes re-annealing in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius in an oxidizing atmosphere, which oxidizes the steel surface. This oxidation, followed by pickling, roughens the cold rolled surface. The coils then receive a final light skin pass using large-diameter polished rolls, which minimally reduces roughness but enhances the luster and flatness of the coil. This process results in a 2B finish, the most prevalent finish for stainless steels.
